As the New Year approaches, high-quality carrots are in high demand in the Ukrainian market, driving up their prices, according to the EastFruit. Another factor behind the rising demand is the end of sales of this root crop from unprepared storages.
Currently, local farms are shipping carrots at 10-14 UAH/kg ($0.27-0.38/kg), which is about 20% higher than the previous week.
Market players attribute the price hike to a surge in trading activity in the high-quality carrot segment. They say that most farms have stopped selling this root crop, hoping for even higher prices, and have stored most of their harvest. They only sell their excess produce, resulting in a limited supply in the market.
However, it is worth noting that carrots in Ukraine are still 31% cheaper on average than they were last year at this time. Market participants also suggest that the price increase trend might not last long. They believe that if prices continue to rise, farmers will be encouraged to sell more carrots from their storages, which will increase the supply and lower the prices.
