Total Canadian potato storage holdings are up 7.4% compared to 2022

As of December 1, 2023, the aggregate holdings of potato storage in Canada have experienced a 7.4% surge compared to 2023, significantly surpassing the triennial average.

The market demand, as indicated by most, was satisfactory but not exceptional in October, preceding the Canadian Thanksgiving, and experienced a deceleration in November, following the holiday. Exports to the US have seen a downward trend in numerous regions compared to the previous year, predominantly due to the glut and diminished pricing of russets originating from the Pacific Northwest.

The augmentation in storage levels, due to expanded acreage and an exceptional yield in processing crops in Manitoba and Alberta, as well as the fresh crop in BC, is noticeable. This is in stark contrast to the challenging and excessively damp growing season in Eastern Canada, which is reflected in their reduced stock levels compared to 2022.
