The price of oranges is reaching record levels in the agricultural sector, especially for the Navel variety, according to data collected by the Consulate of the Lonja de Valencia. After the Christmas season, the average price of this orange variety stood at 0.35 euro, significantly exceeding the average of the last 16 years, which stands at 18 cents per kilo.
This exceptional price comes at a critical time of the season, as the market transitions from the earliest varieties to later varieties, such as Navelina and Valencia Late. It's worth noting that the 35 euro cents per kilo price is taking place in a season with high price expectations due to the low harvest, as Spain's citrus production forecast has decreased from 7 million tons to around 5.7 million tons.
In the previous campaign (2022-23), which was also characterized by a reduced harvest, Navel prices reached an all-time high, reaching 25 cents per kilo in the first price quotation after the Christmas festivities. This 40% increase in prices will have a significant impact on the turnover of large and small businesses, as well as that of large owners.
In 2012, prices stood at 15 cents per kilo, and in 2013, they fell to 14 cents, marking the minimum price for this variety in its first quotation after Christmas.
