In Ukraine, the cost of potatoes has spiked due to a shortage of storage facilities, and freezing temperatures are expected to impact prices, with forecasts suggesting continued increases until spring.
Maxim Gopka, an analyst from the Ukrainian Agricultural Business Club, highlighted these concerns. The internal potato market in Ukraine continues to experience a rise in prices, escalating by 72% in the last month to reach 0.4 euros/kg in wholesale markets. Supermarkets are now averaging prices at 0.6 euros/kg, reflecting a 42% increase over the past month.
Gopka attributes this surge that most of the potatoes from people's farms have already been sold. Not everyone has storage places for potatoes, so wholesale deliveries are a bit limited right now.
The analyst warns that during severe frosts, there is a risk of potatoes spoiling, leading to increased storage costs, emphasizing the potential for prolonged price increases in the coming months.
