In 2023, Spain became the second most important destination for Peruvian onions

According to Fresh Fruit, in the last months of last year, Peruvian fresh onion shipments experienced a slight boost thanks to the increase in European demand and Egypt's export ban on onions. This scenario provided an opportunity for the Peruvian onion to gain a greater market share and demonstrate its quality.

Between January and November of last year, Peru exported 227,273 tons of onions, generating revenues of US$91 million. While the export volume and value decreased by 12% and 2%, respectively, there was an 11% increase in the price of the product over 2022. The situation in Egypt and the increase in demand in Europe positioned Spain as the Peruvian onion's second most important destination market.

The United States continued to be the main destination with a 58% share, acquiring a total of 110,698 tons for US$53 million. However, exports to this market decreased by 24% in volume and 16% in value. The price in this market increased by 10%, reaching US$0.48 per kilogram.

It was followed by Spain, which surpassed Colombia, with 41,341 tons worth US$22 million and a 24% share. Exports to this market increased by 53% in volume and 91% in value over 2022. The price also increased by 24%, reaching US$0.53 per kilogram, one of the highest prices in the European market.

Colombia ranked third with 46,425 tons worth US$10 million, i.e. 22% less volume and 23% less value than in the previous year. The price also fell by 2% to US$0.22 per kilogram.
