Former Minister raises alarm on substandard agricultural products threatening Kashmir's fruit industry

Abdul Gani Vakil, Senior Vice President of J&K Peoples Conference and a former minister, has expressed serious concerns about the influx of substandard pesticides and manure in the market. This unchecked issue could potentially undermine the strength of Kashmir's fruit industry, including key vegetables and crops.

During his tour of several villages in Rafiabad, Vakil expressed deep-seated fears about the UT administration's apparent indifference towards the fruit industry. He placed the blame squarely on the central government, accusing them of disregarding the sector's growth and development.

Vakil shed light on the grave difficulties faced by the fruit industry, which has been hit hard by natural disasters, the COVID pandemic, and sporadic shutdowns of the National Highway. Despite the industry's critical role as a livelihood source for thousands, both the Central and UT governments have consistently ignored the pleas of fruit growers, particularly regarding KCC loan waivers and the allocation of a special economic package.

Vakil made a direct appeal to the central government, urging them to provide immediate and comprehensive support to help fruit growers revive the industry. His plea emphasized the need to preserve the livelihoods of thousands of families dependent on the fruit industry.

In addition, Vakil stressed the urgent need for government intervention to protect the fruit industry. He highlighted the importance of taking swift action against those involved in the sale of substandard agricultural products, to prevent their harmful effects on the industry.
