The planting of potatoes seems to be advancing at a good pace in Andalusia. Producers expect to leave behind the problems suffered last season both in western Andalusia and in the early areas of Cartagena, where, in many cases, yields fell from the usual 45 tons per hectare to less than 20 tons per hectare.
According to Javier Boceta, from Meijer, the number of hectares this year will be similar to the area last year. "We have a highly demanded product and an organized sector that is rowing in the same direction."
Nearly 80% of the area in the region formed by Seville and neighboring provinces, such as Cadiz and Cordoba, has already been planted and now everything is in the hands of the weather. In the province of Seville, for example, the ‘window’ for harvesting goes from the beginning of May and mid-June. Thus, if there's a storm on May 1 and another one around the 15th "we can say goodbye to the campaign," he said, recalling that the potatoes don't last much in the fields after June 15 because of the high temperatures at that time of the year.
