A new industry report commissioned by the National Farmers' Union (NFU) reveals that the escalating production costs over the past two years are jeopardizing the growth of East Anglia's fruit and vegetable sector. The report, prepared by Promar International, indicates that horticultural production costs have surged by up to 39pc in the past two years.
This includes substantial price rises in crucial inputs such as energy (up 218pc), fertilizer (47pc), and labor (24pc). The report notes that these increases have particularly affected popular UK fruits and vegetables like strawberries, tomatoes, apples, and lettuce.
These pressures have compelled some prominent horticulture businesses to abandon their growth plans, thereby endangering the sector's future. Norfolk NFU chairman Tim Papworth emphasized the need for fairer prices from retailers to maintain a viable supply chain and enhance UK self-sufficiency.
Papworth stressed, "Farmers here could grow much more if the issues raised in this report are addressed." NFU horticulture and potatoes board chair Martin Emmett shared his concerns about growers considering reducing production due to cost uncertainties and challenging supply chain relationships.
