Dutch company to shut factory, leaving production staff jobless

On Monday, Hessing told its employees about its intended decision to close its production location in Zwaagdijk, the Netherlands. By mid-2024, the VersFabriek's doors - where the fruit and vegetable processor produces things like stir-fry vegetables and salads - will close. That work will be transferred to the company's new factory in Venlo, which became operational in the spring of 2023. Production workers will, thus, lose their jobs, while support staff will remain at Zwaagdijk.

Difficult decision
For General Manager Frank Hessing, it is a difficult decision. "Our company has its origins in West Friesland. My father started processing vegetables at home, which he then delivered to customers in the neighborhood by bike," he says. The business grew rapidly and has been located in Zwaagdijk since 1992. "To future-proof the organization, we're unfortunately forced to bid our production location there farewell."

Employees
The workers concerned have already been informed. Hessing is currently working out a social plan, laying out what its employees can expect financially and helping them find new employment. "It's the least we can do. Many have been loyal to our company for a long time," Frank concludes.
