Cyprus orange industry grapples with climate change and land development

Due to the adverse effects of climate change on global crop yields and extensive land development in Cyprus, consumers are likely to experience a 20% increase in orange prices. Chris Markidis, KEAN's director, attributes the steep rise to a threefold increase in orange juice costs. He identified Brazil, America, Spain, and Egypt as the primary sources of imported orange juice.

Markidis noted a significant decline in Cyprus' orange production, primarily due to land development. The combination of climate change's impact on agriculture and the increased costs of importing orange juice from key markets poses significant challenges to Cyprus' local orange industry.

The expected price increase not only signifies an immediate effect on consumers but also highlights the broader impact of environmental changes on the global supply chain and local economies.
