Fresh cranberry sales on the up in UK/Europe

Habelman Bros, one of the world’s largest growers of fresh cranberries, and part of the Cranberry Cooperatives of the Americas (CCA) have reported a better than expected demand in the UK & Europe zone this year.

Habelman Bros is represented in the UK by Fruit World International and in Europe by Nature’s Pride, both entities are prominent fresh cranberry distributors in their respected regions. They are reporting strong sales having delivered above pre season program volumes for all customers.

"There are thought to be a mix of reasons for the increases," explains Jon Clark Managing Director of Fruit World International. "Traditional sauce / meal use, increased consumption of fresh cranberries for gut health and smoothie mixes, as well as an upturn for events such as USA Thanksgiving. The influence of social media showing uses of cranberries in ice cubes for drinks, candle and water displays and many other creative ways to bring a real festive feel were also a factor."

The retailers that saw the largest over performance in sales were those that ranged cranberry for the longest period.

"It is thought that this built sales momentum and gained a following, there was also an upturn in small store sales where it is thought those evening Social Media surfers saw ideas and then went out to act on impulse and try what they had seen."

Cranberries have long been known as a sauce and a 'superfruit' with many benefits, but with a surge in new uses they are expected to a growing global demand.
