"Currently, we are offering tomatoes from the Netherlands. The quality is outstanding, the goods are shiny, tasty, firm, and juicy, making them ideal for our customers. These are exclusively greenhouse-grown," says Murat Günes from Westfalen Frischdienst Ltd. "When the tomatoes from the Netherlands were not available for a few days in week 1 or 2, we briefly switched to tomatoes from Spain. Otherwise, we offer the goods almost all year round." He sells four to five pallets weekly to his pickup and delivery customers, with approximately 120 boxes of 5 kg each.
"The prices are comparable to the same month last year. Sometimes, prices were extremely high last year, but they have remained relatively stable overall. The demand is always there, whether for vine tomatoes, large round tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, beef tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, etc. We always source the goods from the Netherlands and try to avoid imports, such as from Spain, as much as possible. This is not due to the quality, but rather because we want to buy as locally as possible," says Günes. "We mainly receive German goods in the summer, where the price is slightly higher than the Dutch goods. In the season, we mainly sell the Natura variety from the Netherlands, which should start at the end of February. After the season, we switch to other varieties."
Record turnover with chanterelles
In 2023, Westfalen Frischdienst Ltd was able to achieve 35 percent higher turnover. "We celebrated our seventh anniversary last year and were able to achieve a sales increase every year. The forecast for 2024 also looks promising. We have gained good customers. At Christmas and in January, we received many inquiries from restaurants and cafes. This will show again this year." In the summer of 2024, they were able to achieve record sales with chanterelles. "We have over 4,000 items in our range, in addition to fruit and vegetables, and will increase our presence regarding products such as canned and frozen goods etc." A total of eleven employees are working for his company.
New subsidiary: Koyash Union
"We have greatly expanded our mushroom range, and we are offering asparagus more frequently as well. But we also sell products like cress and sprouts in larger quantities now. Our core business is supplying kitchens, canteens, etc., but last year we also started the import business. In this regard, we have founded a new trading company called Koyash Union, which exclusively takes care of picking up the goods from the producers and selling them to other wholesale businesses."
