Onion prices skyrocket in Pakistan as inflation rises

Prices of consumer goods in the Pakistani retail sector remain unchecked as onion prices hit Rs320 per kg in the nation's capital. Data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics indicates a surge in high-quality onion prices in domestic markets, with retailers attributing the price hike to substantial exports.

In Islamabad, onions are retailing at Rs320 per kg. Comparatively, the vegetable, highly sought-after compared to other produce, is available at Rs310 per kg in Rawalpindi, Rs280 in Peshawar and Rs270 in Sialkot.

Additionally, according to the PBS, onions are selling at Rs240 per kg in Karachi, Lahore, and Gujranwala, and Rs220 in Faisalabad, Sargodha, Multan, and Bahawalpur. However, in Hyderabad and Bannu, the vegetable is priced at Rs200 per kg.

The PBS also reported a 0.34 per cent increase in weekly inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), for combined consumption groups for the week ending January 18.
