In a unanimous decision, the Transnistrian Government has implemented a seasonal import duty on apples, aiming to safeguard domestic agricultural producers. The customs duty will take effect from January 27, 2024. The Ministry of Economic Development spearheaded the document's development.
According to First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development, Sergey Obolonik, Transnistria harvested over 13,000 tons of apples in 2023, surpassing the population's fresh fruit demand of just over 10,000 tons.
To support local agriculture, the proposed resolution suggests a seasonal customs duty of 10% or 15 cents per kilogram on apple imports until June 30, 2024. This measure aims to ensure the price competitiveness of domestically produced goods in the internal market.
Approximately 300 agricultural organisations and peasant-farmer households engage in fruit cultivation in Transnistria.
