By November 2023, Peru had exported 10,164 tons of bananas, generating revenues of $7.9 million. The export volume decreased by 7%, but the value increased by 3%. This improvement in value was attributed in part to a 10% increase in the average price, which reached $0.77 per kilogram, according to data from Fresh Fruit.
In November 2023, Peru sent its bananas to 10 countries. The Netherlands stood out with a 38% share (3,785 tons worth $3 million), a 13% increase in volume, and a 27% increase in value compared to 2022. It was followed by the United States with a 13% share (1,443 tons worth $1 million), a 29% decrease in volume, and a 26% fall in value. Italy ranked third with a 10% share (1,104 tons worth $816 thousand), with an outstanding 77% increase in volume and a 111% increase in value over the previous year.
The average price in these three markets also had positive variations. In the Netherlands, it increased by 12% reaching US$0.79 per kilogram; in the United States, it increased by 5% reaching US$0.70; and in Italy, it experienced an 19% increase reaching US$0.74.
However, it's important to note that, for 2024, Ecuador, one of the main banana exporters, has set the minimum price for a box of bananas at US$6.85, a highly competitive price when compared to the Peruvian price (US$8.91 per box in November). This situation could affect Peruvian banana exports, especially in the Dutch and US markets, two of its main destinations.
