Severe weather, including hail and heavy rainfall, wreaked havoc in the Kokkinochoria region of Cyprus on Monday night, leaving farmers grappling with the aftermath. The agricultural sector, particularly the potato industry, bore the brunt of the destruction, with Xylofagou and Frenaros being the hardest hit.
Andreas Karyos, representing the potato growers, reported significant losses in the early potato crops in Xylofagou, while a smaller area in Frenaros also suffered substantial damage. Besides potatoes, several other crops were impacted by flooding. A comprehensive evaluation of the devastation is anticipated to take a few days.
On Tuesday morning, officials from the Department of Agriculture initiated field visits to aid farmers in documenting their losses for future aid. Simultaneously, teams from the Larnaca District Administration have been documenting property damages in Xylofagou, a vital part of the compensation process.
