The Association of Virginia Potato & Vegetable Growers has announced a rebranding initiative to better align with the evolving landscape of agricultural production in Virginia.
In a letter addressed to its members, the association acknowledges the significant decline in vegetable production acreage in eastern Virginia over the past few decades. Factors contributing to this decline include labor shortages, environmental and water constraints, food safety concerns, changes in contract availability, vertical integration, and industry consolidation.
In response to these shifts in the agricultural sector, the association has decided to broaden its scope and inclusivity. Henceforth, it will operate under the name "The Association of Eastern Virginia Agricultural Producers, Inc." This new identity aims to encompass a wider range of agricultural activities beyond just potatoes and vegetables. The rebranding reflects a commitment to represent and advocate for all agricultural producers in eastern Virginia, including those involved in grains, aquaculture, nursery operations, viticulture, small fruits, and poultry.
Membership is open to growers, agricultural industry professionals, and government/educational personnel, with annual dues set at $50. Members will have the opportunity to participate in two meetings per year and receive advocacy support on agricultural issues affecting their industry. The association will continue to organize the Eastern Shore Agricultural Conference and Trade Show annually in January, with plans to expand its outreach efforts.
Ursula Tankard Deitch, Marketing Specialist at the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, encourages eligible individuals to consider joining the association. She highlights the organization's role as a platform for farmers to drive positive changes and raise awareness about Virginia's agricultural industry locally and beyond.
