Every year, the holiday season around Christmas and New Year boosts the fruit and vegetable business. However, the current marketing season for table apples has so far been somewhat mixed. The trade should finally pick up with the intensification of exports after the turn of the year. Whether the current campaign can keep up with the extremely successful previous years is doubtful, given a significantly below-average harvest compared to the previous year of around 156,000 tons, -18%, and therefore a weaker supply.
Against this backdrop, the AMA wholesale price for table apples in December rose to a multi-year record level with an average of 1.09 EUR/kg, thus nurturing the industry's hope for a farmer's payout price of at least 0.60 EUR/kg net. The AMA inventory for table apples (organic and conventional) showed a decrease of 7% compared to the previous month and 24% compared to the previous year in December (as of 01.12.) with 66,632 tons. All varieties recorded by the AMA were affected equally during the observation period. One thing seems certain. In the medium term, substantial pressure on goods will not arise either domestically or at the European level.
