In 2023, Cote d'Ivoire encountered challenges in its pineapple industry, as reported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Pineapple exports from the country to the international market declined by 27 percent compared to the previous campaign, reaching only 23,557 tonnes. This decrease was also 22 percent lower than the five-year average of 30,291 tonnes.
The FAO attributes this decline to unfavorable weather conditions that affected the growing season, leading to reduced supply in Cote d'Ivoire's production areas. Additionally, the average unit value of the country's pineapple exports dropped to $460 per tonne between January and July 2023, marking a 10 percent decline compared to the previous year.
Despite these challenges, the European Union remains the primary market for Cote d'Ivoire's pineapple shipments, with France and Belgium emerging as the main buyers, accounting for approximately 57 percent of imports from the West African country.
Pineapple holds significance as the third-largest source of foreign exchange in Cote d'Ivoire's fruit industry, following banana and mango.
