Potato crops in Famagusta, Cyprus suffer severe weather damage

Andreas Karyos, head of the potato producer’s association, reported that over 40% of potato crops in the Famagusta district were damaged due to inclement weather. He stated that the rainfall in the Kokkinochoria area has led to the flooding of numerous potato plantations.

Karyos mentioned that the entire district's potato plantation has been impacted by the rainfall and flooding, causing potential potato rot. However, the full extent of the damage will only be ascertainable after 10 to 15 days when the fields are accessible for assessment.

He also confirmed that potato fields in all the communities in Kokkinochoria, including Ormideia, Xylofagou, and Paralimni, were flooded. Karyos reassured that the damage, although significant, is not total and is estimated to be above 40%.

He further explained that the Department of Agriculture is informed about such severe weather events, and damage declarations will be made once officials can assess the flooded fields and confirm damage exceeding 30%.
