Paul Peters, Gebr. Peters Fruit Trade:

"Good prospects for the European top fruit market, but we must keep trade going"

The European top fruit season is going well. "When you consider Elstar apples are priced between €0.90 and €1.20, and that good-sized Conference pears are selling for €1, we certainly cannot complain. But growers need those prices, considering the huge cost increases they've faced," says Paul Peters of Gebr. Peters Fruithandel in the Netherlands.

"How the market develops further remains to be seen, but we know European pear stocks are low. Around this time of the Berlin trade show, imported pears often come onto the market. I don't think those volumes will significantly increase, as they, too, want to keep good prices. Overseas suppliers know how to find other markets, too. The problems in the Suez Canal, however, are a setback and hinder Polish apple exports to Asia."

"But, looking ahead, I'm optimistic about both apples and pears. Most importantly, we have tasty products after a great summer. But we must remain vigilant about the quality and not forget to sell. After all, a bid that's too high is always retracted. Better to regret selling that to regret keeping," concludes Paul.
