Famagusta region, Cyprus

Minister pledges ‘immediate compensation’ to hailstorm-affected potato farmers

Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou has pledged immediate compensation to potato farmers in the Famagusta region of Cyprus, following severe damage caused by recent hailstorms and heavy rains. The minister made the announcement during a visit to Avgorou, where she inspected the damage. She revealed that talks with farmers' organisations have already taken place and confirmed that the risk-management fund has €8 million available for compensation.

Andreas Karyos, a representative of the potato farmers, expressed dissatisfaction with the current agricultural compensation framework and called for changes. Panikos Hambas, the general-secretary of the farmers union Eka, warned of potential protests similar to those seen in Paris, Germany, Greece and Spain, where tractors surrounded European Union institutions.
