Farmers in Malta and Greece voice concerns over EU trade deals and rising production costs

Former Maltese Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, recently shared his perspective on the concerns raised by European farmers, including those in Malta, regarding a proposed trade deal between the EU and Mercosur, South America's trading bloc. He said, “The EU spends most of its budget on agriculture. What the French farmers and others are saying is that, for example, the Maltese shouldn’t be allowed to buy food at cheaper prices from outside the EU but they must buy it from France at higher prices. Then Maltese people will have to buy food at a higher price, which leads to a cost of living problem."

Meanwhile in Greece, farmers and other primary sector representatives rallied outside the annual Agrotica trade fair in Thessaloniki to protest against escalating production costs. The farmers, affected by increased costs and crop damage from recent floods and wildfires, intend to intensify their protests in the coming days. Despite the Greek government's new support package, farming associations described the measures as a “drop in the ocean” and pledged to strengthen highway blockades starting this weekend.
