A project to revive the fruit and vegetable sector in Sardinia:

"We are looking for seed companies interested in supplying plant material"

The three-year project, called Fisineddu, involves two agricultural companies in the Sardinian region, Laore and Agris, and the fruit, vegetable and food market located in Sestu (Cagliari). It is aimed at revitalizing the fruit and vegetable sector in Sardinia by experimenting and field-testing horticultural varieties ideally suited to the soil and climatic conditions of the island.

"Each year, a number of horticultural crops will be tested (such as green and yellow melon, strawberry, artichoke, cabbage and fennel, and tomato), for each of which there will be crop profiles and guided tours of the educational test plots through Field Day events scheduled during the months of fruit growth and harvest," says Marcello Onorato, director of the agricultural development company Laore. The aim is to work towards producing innovative, consumer-friendly horticultural crops that meet economic, social and environmental sustainability requirements and, above all, that satisfy the tastes and needs of the end consumer. The local market, where 2,000 farmers and three producer organizations meet and confer, will be an important platform."

This is why we will consult with vegetable seed companies in the next few weeks. "We will be evaluating proposals from seed companies for the start of the trial campaign. The first deadline is set for the end of February. We are looking for plant material that will be planted in the area that is suitable for horticultural crops. Interested companies will therefore have to provide the seeds or plants (in limited quantities) with a description of the variety and characteristics. In return, they will be guaranteed commercial visibility, the experimentation of their varieties and the possible sale of the seeds. For the companies that decide to join, there are no expenses or financial contributions.”

The Fisineddu project saw a first experimental phase already in 2023, when it started trials on high lycopene tomatoes through plot, field and panel tests to verify the main characteristics of berries. The project, strongly supported by the Regional Councillor for Agriculture, Valeria Satta, involves setting up a unit to monitor the Sardinian fruit and vegetable market, combined with field studies.
