Fruit and vegetable importers claim it is impossible for Maltese farmers to meet demand

Fruit and vegetable importers in Malta have countered the demonstrations by local farmers demanding restrictions on non-EU produce, arguing such measures would lead to a significant price surge due to increased demand for local products.

Importers highlight the necessity of non-EU goods to maintain balanced supermarket stocks and price stability. They refute the need for more stringent testing, pointing out that foreign products undergo inspections both in their origin countries and upon entering Malta. Criticism was also directed at the quality of Maltese produce, with claims of rejection from international restaurant chains and cruise ships due to lack of certifications and spoilage issues.

This debate follows a recent farmers’ protest against EU regulations, advocating for limits on non-EU imports and stricter testing protocols to match the standards imposed on local goods. However, importers like Mario Mizzi of Mafimex Ltd argue the local production is insufficient to fulfill national demand, using marrows as an example and warning against the economic implications of restricting foreign imports.
