It is midi-plum season for greenhouse intensive crops in south-east Sicily. As confirmed by Giuseppe Busacca from Harmoniz Italia, producers are very excited as the segment is receiving good feedback along the entire tomato chain thanks to the favorable consumption levels.
Midres F1 greenhouse crop
"Midres is a midi-plum suitable for the counter-seasonal cycles Sicilian producers need. When I say suitable, I mean that it is a variety developed specifically in Sicily for Sicilian conditions. Considering the growing demand for this product, midi-plum tomatoes have been considered a strategic crop by Harmoniz for years, so much so that they are at the center of our local breeding programs."

"As is known, in fact, the midi-plum segment has grown gradually over the past 10/15 years in response to new consumer needs linked with deeper social and cultural transformations. It is still a segment driven by an increasing demand for versatility, contained sizes for trays, shelf-life and, most of all, flavor."

"Bearing in mind the characteristics sought by the big retail chains and final consumers, we developed this variety with the aim to solve a series of agronomic issues that many competitor varieties currently on the market face during the winter cycle, especially between November and March. These range from the sensitivity to various diseases such as soft rot or yellow calyx, to the loss of quality already in the greenhouse with a very low shelf-life. Midres helps producers tackle all those issues that drastically reduce yields and the quality of the final produce and which often represent a reason for complaint after a sale."

"From a productive point of view, this variety boasts an intermediate resistance to ToBRFV. Plants are vigorous yet easy to manage and with a good performance at vegetative level. In addition, they maintain constant high yields until the end of the cycle, with an extremely low waste incidence. Suitable for transplants from late August, they deal well with stress in winter and prolonged conditions of high humidity, low light and extreme temperature changes, maintaining an excellent shelf-life and high quality of the fruits in the greenhouse, included for October transplants."
"The extraordinary quality of the fruits shown in greenhouses continues to be such even after harvesting. Shelf-life is excellent, color is uniform and bright, Brix level is high: all these essential requirements make Midres an ideal variety for all sales channels, both domestic and foreign."
