This year, the Kherson region in Ukraine is expanding its cultivation of melon crops and vegetables. According to Dmitry Yunusov, the acting director of Kherson's Department of Agricultural Development and Irrigation, the region is set to increase its acreage for watermelons to 1000 hectares, up from last year's 200 hectares. Additionally, the cultivation of other vegetable crops such as potatoes and tomatoes will expand to nearly 5000 hectares.
Yunusov stated, "As these products are in high demand and command a good price, some farmers are transitioning to these crops." This increase in cultivation became possible due to the expansion of cleared land areas. As of February 28th, 184 hectares of agricultural land in the Kherson region have been cleared of mines.
"Compared to last year, these figures have nearly doubled, thanks to the land clearance of mines efforts. Over a thousand deminers are working in the Kherson region, a significant number compared to other regions. This year alone, we have cleared over 40,000 hectares and plan to clear more than 240,000 hectares of agricultural land. I believe we can achieve this target," Yunusov added.
