New Zealand is reporting an excellent quality onion crop, as this season's harvest comes to an end.
'Most onions have been harvested and transferred into storage sheds. The quality of the crop is excellent and will store well, which means an extended export season. The weather has been optimal for growing and harvesting, resulting in high grower confidence around the quality, volume, and storage potential of this year's crop,' says Onions NZ chief executive, James Kuperus.
'Exports for the 2024 season have started to the European and North Asian markets, with exports to Indonesia to start shortly. Europe remains an important market for early season New Zealand onions. With the EU/NZ Free Trade Agreement coming into force soon, we expect to see tariff cost savings towards the end of this export season to Europe.
'Although Indonesia has introduced new biosecurity requirements, the sector is confident we will be able to meet these requirements. We are looking forward to shipping there this season with positive signals from the market.'
James says the New Zealand onion sector is aligned and working together to ensure reliable supply to key export markets and to ensure Indonesia's requirements are met.
'The New Zealand onion sector is an integrated and cohesive sector, with a good history of consistently supplying our customers around the world.'
