On Thursday, MEPs cast their votes in favor of extending the suspension of import duties and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural exports to the EU for an additional year, spanning from 6 June 2024 to 5 June 2025. This decision, aimed at supporting Ukraine amid ongoing conflict with Russia, passed with 26 votes in favor, 10 against, and 1 abstention. The legislation permits the European Commission to promptly address any significant market disruptions within the EU or its member states caused by Ukrainian imports. An emergency mechanism is included for sensitive agricultural products such as poultry, eggs, and sugar, allowing for the reinstatement of tariffs if imports exceed the average volumes of 2022 and 2023.
Furthermore, the extension is contingent upon Ukraine's adherence to democratic principles, human rights, the rule of law, and efforts against corruption and organized crime. In parallel, MEPs voted to suspend all import duties from Moldova for another year, demonstrating continued support for both countries.
Sandra Kalniete, rapporteur for the Ukraine file, emphasized the EU's unwavering support for Ukraine, highlighting the balance between aiding Ukraine and protecting EU markets. The European Parliament is set to vote on this matter in its upcoming plenary session. Following Parliament's approval, the Council will formally adopt the regulation, leading to its enforcement upon publication in the EU Official Journal.
