In Chile, the Royal Gala apple season usually starts in February. This year, though, it was delayed by about ten days. "There's currently very high demand, including from South America and India. The volumes are lower than last year, but the apples' color is beautiful," says Silvia Piezzi, who has been working with the Chilean company Nicofrut for 15 years. "Because of its consistent quality and good performance, customers ask for the same brand every year."
The Argentine entrepreneur is well-known in the Dutch fresh produce sector and has worked at the Barendrecht trading center for many years. Silvia is preparing for the South American stone fruit season. "There should be plenty of interest from the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and other European countries. Royal Galas really capture clients' imaginations," she concludes.
In April, Granny Smith will follow these apples, and in May, Crisp Pink. The harvest lasts three to five weeks. To ensure quality, harvesting is done only on dry days. According to Silvia, this year's weather conditions have been good, unlike previous years.
