In the fiscal year 2022-23, Tamil Nadu achieved a significant milestone in mango exports, totaling ₹6.6 billion, including both mango pulp and fresh mangoes, with a collective weight of 66,900 tons. This was announced by E Somasundaram, Director of Agri-Business Management at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, during a conference focused on 'Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in mango cultivation and export.' The event, held at the Horticultural College and Research Institute in Periyakulam, was a collaborative effort with several organizations including APEDA and the Directorate of Agri Business Development at TNAU, aimed at enhancing the export capabilities and financial well-being of mango farmers in the region.
During the conference, Somasundaram emphasized the importance of precision in mango cultivation and cluster farming to boost farmer incomes and export quality. The adoption of GAP was discussed as a means to add value to mango products and enhance export figures. Additionally, it was noted that mango exports to the United States saw a 19% increase in 2023-24 over the previous year, highlighting the potential for market expansion.
