According to a report by Hortoinfo, Morocco has surpassed the volume of tomatoes that Almeria exports since 2017 and has managed to export triple the volume that the Spanish region ships out. This comparative analysis, which covers from 2013 to 2022, evaluates Almeria's and Morocco's tomato productions, areas, and exports based on data from Estacom (Icex-Tax Agency), the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food for Almeria, and from FAOSTAT and COMTRADE for Morocco.
In 2013, Almeria exported 558.87 million kilos of tomatoes, while Morocco exported 429.07 million. In 2017, however, Morocco surpassed Almeria by exporting 580.42 million kilos of tomatoes, compared to Almeria's 473.98 million kilos. This trend continued until 2022, when Morocco exported 1,028.19 million kilos of tomatoes while Almeria's exports decreased to 386.77 million kilos.
Almeria's cultivation area and production volumes have decreased in the decade analyzed. The area dedicated to tomato cultivation in Morocco has remained relatively stable, going from 14,017 hectares in 2013 to 14,956 in 2022. In contrast, Almeria's tomato cultivation area has fallen from 10,358 hectares in 2013 to 8,205 hectares in 2022. Morocco's production has increased slightly, going from 1,293.32 million kilos in 2013 to 1,388.54 million in 2022. Meanwhile, Almeria has reduced its production from 962.67 million kilos to 717.75 million in the same period.
This analysis reflects a significant change in the tomato export landscape, with Morocco consolidating itself as a leader over Almeria in recent years.
