In the past few years, Belarus has been encountering significant problems regarding potato production and marketing.
Despite its significance as a national brand, potato prices in the country are extremely unstable, leading to dissatisfaction among both producers and consumers.
The oversupply in the market is the primary cause of the decline in the profitability of potato production.
In 2023, agricultural organizations experienced losses, and in 2024, they preferred to reduce the acreage devoted to potato cultivation.
In 2023, potato cultivation across all categories of farms in Belarus occupied 163,000 hectares, and the gross harvest of potatoes exceeded 4 million tons.
Nevertheless, the state approach remains focused on maintaining high production volumes.
However, some large farms remain profitable due to high yields and extensive areas devoted to potatoes. Nevertheless, such cases are exceptions rather than the rule.
One possible solution to the problem is increasing potato processing, which would help alleviate the oversupply in the market and create additional opportunities for product sales.
