Last year, Almeria imported Moroccan tomatoes for a record €18.83 million

In 2023, companies in Almeria imported a record 18.83 million euros worth of tomatoes from Morocco using code 0702 for fresh or refrigerated tomatoes of the Integrated Tariff of the European Communities – TARIC, according to calculations by Hortoinfo based on data from Estacom.

The report highlights that Almeria, Murcia, and Granada were the Spanish provinces that imported the most tomatoes from Morocco in 2023. Almería spent 156.1% more on Moroccan tomatoes than in 2019. The average price was €1.48 per kilo.

Murcia's Moroccan tomato imports amounted to 11.37 million euros, i.e., 31.1% more than in 2019. The region paid an average price of 0.98 euros per kilo. The value of Granada's imports increased by 53.8% in five years, standing at €15.6 million in 2023 and at an average price of €1.42 per kilo.

In terms of volumes, Almería led imports with 12.74 million kilos, accounting for 22% of the country's imports from Morocco. It was followed by Murcia, which imported 11.65 million kilos, and Granada, with 10.99 million kilos. Barcelona and Madrid completed the top five in 2023.

Spain imported 57.92 million kilos of tomatoes from Morocco, i.e., 27.4% more than five years ago, for €83.63 million and at an average price of € 1.44 per kilo.
