The development of Moldova's agribusiness, particularly its nut sector, has long been subject to fluctuations. However, in the past marketing year, fuelled by increased demand and prices, this sector has witnessed positive changes. Summarizing the facts, we attempt to forecast the sustainability of this trend.
Moldovan walnut cultivation enters a phase of qualitative growth. Yet, ten to fifteen years ago, high expectations were shattered by reality. Imported seedlings often failed to adapt to the climate, and some local varieties didn't meet market requirements.
Nevertheless, recent years have shown a shift in dynamics. Moldova now sells more walnuts in shells, increasing profitability for growers. Additionally, there's an expansion in exports to Turkey, alongside the search for alternative markets.
The stability of the fruit business rarely relies solely on the fresh market. It's unlikely that Moldova's walnut industry will thrive without a processing sector. Efforts towards diversification have been made before and continue now.
