A lot of people, from abroad as well, took part in the inauguration of Salvi Vivai's new micropropagation laboratory (Prolab). The event took place on March 22nd 2024 at the Lagosanto facility (Ferrara) in the presence of the owners Giuseppe, Marco and Silvia Salvi, collaborators, multiple authorities and sector operators. Salvi has definitely created a considerable network, so much so that many other nurseries also attended.

"This laboratory is a dream come true. I would like to thank my family and highlight all the hard work carried out by our father, without whom all of this would not have been possible. We now want to push on innovation and genetic improvement even more. After over fifty years in the nursery sector, we felt we needed to expand. We boast agronomic, technical and logistic know-how and a deep knowledge of the needs of the market. By combining these skills with our attitude for innovation, this new project seemed a natural step in the growth of Salvi Vivai," said Silvia Salvi, the mind behind the operation, made possible also thanks to the support of her brothers.

As for genetic improvement, MEP Paolo De Castro stressed that "TEAs are a tool that will enable huge steps forward without bothering GMOs. We know how to obtain good quality in Italy, but we are not well organized to sell lit: that is why we have great margins for improvement."

The entire morning focused on innovation and the younger generations. "Innovation is impossible without the young. Mario Tchu, an engineer from Olivetti in the 1950s and the inventor of the first commercial transistor computer produced in Italy, always used to say this. And he was 34 when he said he wanted to hire young people!

Salvi Vivai features many younger resources: from the heads of the laboratory and acclimatization greenhouses (Nicola Zagari, Francesca Balducci, Chiara Convertino) to the chief operating officer (Luca Pigaiani), the sales manager (Andrea Bagnolini) and greenhouse managers, the average age is rather low and certainly below the sector average.

"Generational change means the combination between the knowledge of the presence and the experience of the past," said Marianna Palella, CEO of Citrus. Nick Kirton, Zespri representative in Europe, thanked Salvi for its great cooperation, as it is the leading supplier of G3 plants.

Inside the laboratory
With a production capacity of 5 million plants a year and a team of skilled experts, Prolab Salvi Vivai aims to represent a point of reference in the field of micropropagation. The laboratory covers over 400 sq m and started by producing kiwifruit plants and cherry rootstocks, but is also working a lot on berries.

Paolo Calvano, Counselor for Accounts of Regione Emilia-Romagna, took care of the final greetings. He said he was proud of the new facility and stressed how much the region is working on the topics addressed by Salvi Vivai.
Lagosanto Mayor Cristian Bertarelli and the Chancellor of the University of Ferrara Laura Ramaciotti also intervened, stressing the positive effect of this new laboratory on the territory.
