Bernardi Ortofrutta

Zero residue radishes overcome the crisis

The production of zero-residue radishes at Bernardi is local to the Rimini province, so that only a few hours pass between harvesting and shipping. Volumes are not huge, but the number of consumers is constant.

Francesco Fabbri and Christopher Bernardi

"We are producing radishes in greenhouses and demand is constant. They are available loose or in bunches. Volumes are not huge, but the price is satisfactory. Production was early due to the weather and organoleptic quality is great: radishes from Romagna are in fact characterized by a flavor that is not too pungent and they do not cause digestion problems."

Radishes are just one of the vegetables Bernardi grows in Romagna. They are currently grown on over 220 hectares, 6 of which are greenhouses.

"Another product for which demand is good is chicory, which is also zero residue, but it is grown in open fields. We are pleased with the market trends. We must also say negotiations in general have recovered over the past two weeks, at least for what concerns us."

Francesco Fabbri, head of agronomic management at Bernardi, illustrates the latest introductions. "All of the irrigation water is now monitored and measured down to the last drop. Thanks to the principles of agriculture 4.0, we manage to measure all of the water we use. By crossing the data with those from the probes, the weather and the phenological stage of crops, we know how much water every crop needs and supply it with precision."

Agretti are also available this time of year

As for Easter week, Bernardi has no expectations. "Maybe things will be more lively on Thursday and Friday, but I have to say the festivities no longer mean larger volumes like they used to."

The company will attend Macfrut in Rimini.
