Uzbekistan’s new onion harvest season commences

Recent reports from EastFruit indicate a downward trend in onion prices across regional markets, primarily due to oversupply and export challenges. In Kazakhstan, for instance, the buying price for onions has sharply declined to $0.033 per kilogram.

Analysts from EastFruit, who had predicted a challenging market for the 2023 onion crop as early as last summer, now suggest that profitability is unlikely. Additionally, the southern regions of Central Asia are already witnessing the new onion harvest season. The Ministry of Agriculture of Uzbekistan has announced the commencement of early onion collection in the Surkhandarya region.

The new crop of onions from the Kumkurgan district has begun to make its way to local markets and is also being exported. The region's favorable climate conditions enable an earlier than usual harvest.

A local farm owner has shared plans to harvest approximately 3,000 tons of early spring onions from a 120-hectare plot. The Ministry of Agriculture emphasizes that onion cultivation not only generates income for farmers but also fulfills the dietary needs of the local populace, affirming onions as a staple in the Uzbek die.
