The House of Representatives is observing the situation of local onion farmers in the Philippines to ensure a consistent supply and stable prices. The House Committee on Agriculture, in collaboration with various government bodies, is exploring strategies to prevent hoarding and manipulation of onion prices.
Efforts are being made to identify and regulate traders exploiting local farmers, which influences market prices. Surprise inspections in markets and storage facilities are planned to monitor onion prices closely. Additionally, the introduction of onion imports is being considered as a method to achieve price stability. According to the Department of Agriculture Bantay Presyo, as of April 5, the cost of local red onions ranged from PHP68 to PHP130 per kilogram, and PHP60 to PHP120 per kilogram for white onions. In December 2022, onion prices reached PHP720 per kilogram due to a limited supply.
