In Uganda, potatoes are crucial for food security and economic stability among farming households. Traditionally, Ugandan farmers have cultivated local potato varieties, but there is a growing interest in Dutch varieties due to their suitability for processing into products like French fries and crisps. These varieties fetch higher prices from processors, increasing their appeal to local farmers. However, the cost of importing Dutch seed potatoes has historically been prohibitive.
Kilimo Kisasa Limited, operating in Uganda's Zombo district, has become a key provider of seed potatoes, particularly Dutch varieties Taurus and Sagitta, to the East African market. By producing these varieties locally, Kilimo Kisasa offers them at reduced prices, benefiting Ugandan farmers financially and contributing to lower carbon emissions from shipping.
The enterprise's efforts are supported by a collaboration with the Embassy of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, and other stakeholders, aiming to develop the Dutch potato variety value chain in Uganda. This includes training in sustainable cultivation practices and implementing effective payment systems. This initiative seeks to improve food security and increase farmer incomes through sustainable production.
