The Port of Gothenburg in Sweden initiated the Skandia Gateway project on April 8, aiming to enhance the quay and deepen the fairway. This development, essential for the Swedish export and import sectors, signifies a decade of planning to upgrade the port's capacity. The project's commencement was marked by a ceremony at Skandiahamnen, the container terminal, attended by stakeholders from various sectors. Göran Eriksson, CEO of the Gothenburg Port Authority, highlighted the project's significance for Swedish industry, stating: "When this project is completed by the turn of the year 2027-2028, Swedish industry will have better transport conditions and be better connected to the rest of the world. This means that Sweden's competitiveness increases, which is the driving force at the Port of Gothenburg."
Andreas Carlson, Swedish Infrastructure and Housing Minister, emphasized the project's role in supporting Sweden's economic growth and achieving climate goals. The Skandia Gateway project entails deepening the ship draft from 13.5 meters to 17.5 meters, accommodating larger vessels, with an allocated budget of around US$270 million. The project timeline includes quay reinforcement starting in February-March 2024, with fairway dredging in the third quarter of 2026, aiming for completion between the fourth quarter of 2027 and the first quarter of 2028.
