Argedava Novaci Agricultural Cooperative, with 800 hectares of cultivation land around Bucharest, Romania, is set to invest EUR 8 million in an onion storage and conditioning facility. This initiative aims to leverage the price differential between periods of overproduction and spring, when Romania predominantly imports onions from the Netherlands.
"Romania currently produces between 30 and 40% of its consumption. The biggest problem is that we do not have conditioning and storage capacities because this vegetable needs some ventilation cells for storage. However, these cells cost a lot," stated IonuĊ£ Vochin, president of the cooperative and executive director of Oxigen Agro Product Company.
Romania's annual onion production surpasses 300,000 tons, but fails to meet domestic consumption needs, leading to significant imports from the Netherlands and other EU countries, totaling over 80,000 tons annually. The lack of adequate storage facilities results in a portion of the domestic production not reaching the market.
