The Spanish company Grupo Clasol bets on berry production in Romania

"Romania becomes a strategic origin, as it will cover an interesting window in the summer"

The Spanish company Grupo Clasol has partnered with the firm FG3S in an ambitious five-year investment plan to develop berry production in Romania. The plan entails the modernization and development of farms, as well as the implementation of technology and efficiency measures in the processing plant.

The company believes that Romania offers great opportunities, especially for blueberries, given the growth of the production and several other factors, including the production schedule.

"The production in Romania kicks off in the second half of June, which is when the Spanish campaign is coming to an end, and it continues until the beginning of September, when the Peruvian volumes start to peak," says César Claramonte, CEO of Grupo Clasol.

"Thus, Romania is becoming a strategic supplier, as it will cover that interesting window in the summer season and allow us to guarantee the supply of berries every month," he says.

"Currently, we are already marketing strawberries, raspberries and blueberries all year round. The fruits come from Spain, Portugal and northern Morocco, as well as from the southern hemisphere. Taking part in a production project in Romania is the first step towards betting on our own production. We are already considering some production projects for blueberries, strawberries and raspberries in different regions that we consider strategic," says César Claramonte.

The company's two main product groups are citrus and stone fruit, and now, according to its CEO, "we aim for berries to become the third key sector for the company. We expect to market about 6 million kilos this campaign," says César Claramonte.
