Over the past three years, watermelon production has spread throughout the country, driven by significant losses in vegetable and pumpkin crops in regions like Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa. This diversification has proven successful, with farmers discovering the viability of cultivating high-quality watermelons not only in southern regions but also in Zakarpattia, central, and eastern areas.
Last year marked the beginning of large-scale watermelon cultivation in Rivne Oblast, with several agricultural enterprises involved. Kirovohrad Oblast allocated 3000 hectares for watermelon cultivation, with farms such as FG "Rodiuche" and SFG "Floria" expanding operations to include this crop. Seed sales for watermelons have surged, indicating growing demand and prompting further expansion of cultivation areas by an estimated 20-30%.
Despite challenges, such as funding and experience shortages, farmers are adapting and employing innovative agricultural technologies. Varieties like Crimson Sweet and Tamtam remain popular, with suppliers reporting increased sales. Additionally, niche melon types like Piel de Sapo, Amarillo, and Cantaloupe are gaining traction.
