This week, the Ukrainian market saw its first batches of locally grown greenhouse tomatoes, according to analysts from the EastFruit project. It's noteworthy that in 2023, Ukrainian greenhouse facilities shipped their first tomato batches to the market on average one and a half weeks later than in the current season. However, the harvest of this produce remains relatively low-volume due to unfavorable weather conditions.
The initial batches of Ukrainian greenhouse tomatoes are currently being offered for sale at prices ranging from 120 to 140 UAH/kg ($3.02-3.52/kg), which is, on average, 67% higher than the prices for the first batches of this produce last year. Market participants forecast that the first significant tomato shipments from these facilities will not be available before the beginning of May.
In addition to local produce, Turkish tomatoes are also present in the Ukrainian market. Market participants report that Turkish tomatoes are offered for sale at much lower prices compared to locally grown ones. Prices for imported tomatoes are quoted in the range of 70-80 UAH/kg ($1.76-2.01/kg).
