Manuel Baides, from Grupo Fruta de Autor:

"The European markets are responding very well to the season's first kakis from Uruguay"

The European markets are starting to receive the first Rojo Brillante kakis from South America, which are gradually gaining ground on the shelves during the spring months.

"Last week, we received the first container of Persimmon type kakis from Uruguay, which we have already delivered to our clients in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the Netherlands," says Manuel Baides, manager of Grupo Fruta de Autor.

"The markets are responding very well and the fruit has been very well received, as despite Uruguay's lower production this year, the quality is good and the sizes are larger," he says.

The company expects to market around 8 containers of off-season kakis this year in what will be its 4th campaign. "The supply of South American kakis is not yet high and there are only a few of us marketing them. In the future, we plan to invest in the productions at origin, as other Spanish companies have already done," says Manuel Baides.

"The off-season kakis are gradually gaining ground on the shelves. New plantations are coming into production and there is increasingly more supply," says the director of Grupo Fruta de Autor. "A few years ago, the volumes were very limited, but now we can offer more continuity and greater specialization to supermarket chains."

"For now, the commercial situation is very positive, with mild weather that is helping boost the consumption of kakis, which we will be selling until mid-June, before the larger volumes of stone fruit arrive," says Baides. "At the same time, we are finishing up the last batches of melon and watermelon from Senegal and starting with the first watermelons from Almería."
