The dispute over the wholesale market is now entering the next round: According to Großmarkthallen Düsseldorf eG, the cooperative of traders at the wholesale market, the city had already started demolition work at the entrance of the site on the night of Monday (April 22) – without any prior notice or consultation. Traders and also customers of the Düsseldorf wholesale market are "deeply shocked and unsettled". "In disbelief, we stand amidst the ruins of what was once a thriving industry," Peter-Josef Eßer, the cooperative's board spokesperson, told NRZ.

"Without any warning and without the ability to prepare, we now find ourselves in a situation where access to the wholesale market resembles a 'dark hole'. This not only endangers our business but especially the safety of everyone who works here and comes to the wholesale market at night," Eßer continues.
