Giant Agro Processing Company Limited has established the inaugural onion processing and storage facility in Bangladesh, aimed at ensuring a steady supply of onions and minimizing post-harvest losses. The facility, part of the Onion Impact Cluster project, is a collaboration between Bangladeshi and Dutch entities, supported by the Dutch government.
This initiative, as detailed by Giant Group chairman Feroz M. Hassan, leverages Dutch expertise to improve the local onion industry's production and storage capabilities, aiming to enhance private sector growth, boost incomes in the onion sector, and reduce import reliance.
Located in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, the center was inaugurated by Agriculture minister Abdus Shahid. With a pilot capacity of 400 tonnes, the project tests innovative storage technology to address the country's onion supply challenges and high post-harvest losses, which have historically reached nearly 30%. The successful implementation of this technology could lead to significant private sector investment, moving towards self-sufficiency in onion production and creating a more stable supply chain for consumers.
