Richard Kruijer, Tuindersbelang:

"Cabbage stocks are now rapidly dwindling"

The sales of both white and red cabbage are currently on an upward trajectory. "We can't complain. Cabbage prices are rising, and the tonnages are increasing, so what more could you want," says Richard Kruijer of Tuindersbelang from Warmenhuizen, which centrally organizes sales for some sixty cabbage growers.

"Customers from Western and Southern Europe continue to purchase cabbage, and now we're also seeing an increasing demand from Eastern Europe. They had planted a bit more early cabbage, but by now they are running out of their own product, creating a gap. Cabbage stocks are rapidly dwindling," continues Richard. According to the seller, cabbage never really runs out. "Then the price might go up, but the supply is currently clearing out quite smoothly."

The future development of sales largely depends on the weather, he says. "Due to the wet conditions, we are behind with planting. The quality of the cabbage is fair, but slightly lower than other years due to the wet weather. However, the lesser batches have already been fairly removed from the market."
