The horticulture department conducted a survey in Tiruchy district, Tamil Nadu, to evaluate the impact of recent gales on banana cultivation. The assessment revealed damage to approximately 500 acres of banana crops. Officials stated that the final report would be submitted to the state government for compensation purposes. Banana cultivation in Tiruchy spans an average of 15,000 acres, with significant cultivation in Lalgudi block. The gales affected various parts of the district, including Thottiyam and T Pettai, where a significant number of banana trees were uprooted.
Subsequent gales also caused damage in Manachanallur and Anthanallur blocks. The horticulture department's field inspections identified that around 360 acres were affected in Thottiyam and T Pettai, impacting about 400 farmers. In Manachanallur and Anthanallur, around 140 acres were damaged, affecting approximately 40 farmers. The damages occurred as the district's banana cultivation neared the end of its harvesting period.
